Double Your Donation to Japan, Get Cool Art, Say Goodbye to Despair

Feeling scared and hopeless about the events in Japan? Want to do something about it? Then come down to the ID, hang out with like-minded people, and buy some art. You'll go home with something cool, and double your giving power: The Murakami Family (Higo Variety Store) will match up to $10,000 of the money raised by this event. (Many employers also match donations, so you should definitely check with your boss about that).

This event, Artists For Japan, is happening because a bunch of us had the same idea: We've got to do something other than watching TV and feeling terrible. So we're donating artwork and inviting you to come down and buy it. Well, not buy it. Donate to the Japanese Red Cross in exchange for it. Checks and credit cards only, please.

There will be paintings, drawings, calligraphy, sumi-e, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, prints, and more. It's all been donated, along with the labor and expenses necessary to put this on.

Whatever level of support you can offer, please join us in saying no to fear and hopelessness, and yes to compassion and action.

Japan paper cranesThe Japanese Student Association (JSA) of the University of Washington, in addition to their donation collection efforts, is hosting a paper-crane making day in a yet-to-be-decided room of Lander Hallon the UW campus. Origami paper cranes traditionally signify hope, luck, and peace in Japanese culture. JSA officers will be present to help those who do not know how to fold cranes, so all are welcome to attend.

The JSA encourages those who cannot attend this event to make paper cranes on their own and send them to:
